Murmuration

A woman sitting on a brown cushioned seat next to a wooden shelving unit with several open shelves. She is wearing a gray long-sleeve top and beige pants, with short brown hair, and is smiling at the camera. Behind her is a large abstract watercolor painting on the wall depicting blue, gray, and black shapes. The room has white walls, a gray wood floor, an electrical outlet near the floor, and a woven basket on top of the shelving unit.

As an artist, I am endlessly inspired by the mesmerizing sight of starling murmurations. There is an undeniable sense of wonder and awe that comes from witnessing thousands of birds coming together to create breathtaking, organic formations in the sky. The rhythmic sound of their wings as they move as one is truly poetic and almost otherworldly. It's a reminder that nature's beauty and complexity far surpass anything that can be created by technology.

These sightings are rare and fleeting, much like the elusive northern lights, making them even more precious and captivating. During the winter months in northern Europe, these murmurations dance at dawn and dusk, captivating all who are lucky enough to witness them. As the birds flock together, they demonstrate the power and beauty of collective action, self-organizing, charting courses, avoiding predators, and protecting each other. It is a poignant reminder of the African proverb, "Alone we can go fast, together we can go far."

In my work, I strive to capture the essence of these breathtaking murmurations and the profound sense of unity and harmony they embody. Through my art, I aim to evoke the same sense of wonder and awe that I feel when experiencing these natural phenomena. My hope is to remind others of the beauty and power of nature and the importance of coming together for the greater good.
